Water Softeners: RLC Fully Automatic Ion-Exchange Softening

Water softeners must match raw hardness, required residual hardness, peak flow and regeneration conditions; undersized resin capacity causes hardness breakthrough before the next regeneration cycle.

YONGFAN RLC fully automatic water softeners use cation-exchange resin beds and modular brine tanks to remove calcium and magnesium ions down to ≤0.03 mmol/L across boiler feedwater, cooling towers, laundries, and commercial hot-water systems.

Raw Hardness ≤10.0 mmol/L
Residual Hardness ≤0.03 mmol/L Target
Inlet Pressure 0.2 – 0.6 MPa
Inlet Turbidity ≤1 NTU Limit

Hardness Breakthrough Begins Before the Softener Looks Faulty

A boiler plant can have running pumps, full brine tanks, and normal inlet pressure but still discharge hard water if exchange capacity, peak draw, or feedwater turbidity are incorrectly matched.

Ion-Exchange Mechanism

Why Pipe Size Alone Cannot Size a Softener

Per U.S. EPA Cation Exchange guidance, calcium and magnesium ions are exchanged for sodium on resin beads; total raw hardness loading determines treated volume per cycle.

Sizing by Pipe Diameter Alone

Two systems with identical flow need completely different resin volumes if one receives 1 mmol/L hardness and the other receives 8 mmol/L.

Impact: Premature resin bed exhaustion & boiler scaling

Ignoring Peak Service Flow

Sizing for 24-hour average flow chokes during peak morning draw, causing excessive pressure drop and channel channeling.

Impact: Severe pressure drop & untreated water bypass

Turbid Feedwater (>1 NTU)

Suspended solids coat resin bead surfaces, blind the upper bed, increase head loss, and drastically cut ion exchange rates.

Impact: Permanent resin fouling; pre-filtration mandatory

Regeneration Supply & Drain Gaps

Treating brine regeneration as an afterthought leaves plant rooms without salt storage, adequate rinse water, or high-capacity drains.

Impact: Interrupted soft water supply during recharge

Two Distinct Capacities That Must Be Balanced

Every industrial softener installation must verify both hydraulic flow and ion-exchange chemistry per EPA Water Softener Guides.

01 / Hydraulic Peak m³/h flow passed without channeling or excessive ΔP
02 / Chemical Grams of Ca²⁺/Mg²⁺ exchanged before brine regeneration is triggered
03 / Turbidity Feedwater ≤1 NTU (or upstream mechanical pre-filtration)
04 / Continuity Simplex vs Duplex alternating vessels for 24/7 uninterrupted feed

RLC Water Softener Application Routing

Tailoring resin capacity, vessel configuration, and regeneration cycles to distinct commercial, industrial, and institutional processes.
Application 01

Boiler Feed Pretreatment

Delivers ≤0.03 mmol/L softened makeup water to protect steam boilers from calcium scale. Feedwater with >1 NTU turbidity must include upstream pre-filtration.

Application 02

Heat Exchangers & Hot Water

Prevents calcium carbonate scaling on plate and tube heat exchanger surfaces. Softener is installed on cold makeup supply (2–50 °C) rather than hot recirc loops.

Application 03

Hotels & Commercial Laundries

Cuts detergent consumption and protects laundry boilers and water heaters during sharp morning peak draw. Duplex alternating design ensures continuous soft water.

Application 04

Food, Beverage & Healthcare

Protects autoclaves, bottle washers, and process equipment. Wetted material compliance and downstream polishing (RO/EDI) reviewed per project requirements.

Water Softeners FAQ

Direct engineering answers regarding ion-exchange mechanisms, raw hardness limits, brine regeneration, and sizing.

What does the RLC water softener remove?

The RLC removes calcium (Ca²⁺) and magnesium (Mg²⁺) hardness ions through sodium cation-exchange resin beds.

What raw-water hardness can it accept?

YONGFAN documents ≤10.0 mmol/L raw-water hardness for the standard RLC operating boundary.

What residual outlet hardness is documented?

The supplier states residual softened water hardness of ≤0.03 mmol/L under standard operating conditions.

What inlet turbidity is allowed?

The documented limit is ≤1 NTU. Feedwater with higher turbidity requires mechanical pre-filtration to prevent resin fouling.

What is the standard water-temperature range?

RLC is documented for 2 to 50 °C water. It must be installed on cold makeup lines, not hot recirculation loops.

What inlet pressure should be provided?

The standard operating pressure window is 0.2 to 0.6 MPa. Excessive pressure requires upstream pressure reduction.

Does RLC require regeneration salt?

Yes. Saturated sodium chloride (NaCl) brine is automatically drawn during regeneration to replenish sodium ions on the resin.

Can RLC operate continuously without soft-water interruption?

Yes, by specifying a duplex alternating vessel configuration, where one tank regenerates while the other remains in service.

07 / Application Boundaries

Water Softener Engineering Boundaries

Understanding the chemical and thermal boundaries where ion exchange applies versus other physical water treatment methods.
Boundary 01 / Turbidity

Not a Solids Filter

Do not use RLC to remove suspended solids when turbidity exceeds 1 NTU; install mechanical pre-filters upstream.

Boundary 02 / Demineralization

Not Demineralized Water

Cation exchange replaces calcium and magnesium with sodium. It does not reduce total dissolved solids (TDS) or remove silica.

Boundary 03 / Temperature

2 to 50 °C Limit

Do not apply standard RLC to hot boiler return or process lines above 50 °C; high temperatures degrade cation resin beads.

Boundary 04 / Biological & Gas

No Degassing or Biocide

Softening does not remove dissolved oxygen, carbon dioxide, or bacteria. Pair with deaerators and chemical biocides as required.
