Industrial Gas-Phase Filtration: Targeted Molecular Adsorption & Chemisorption

Gas-phase filtration should be selected from the contaminant, airflow direction and protection objective—not from a generic “activated carbon filter” label.

Compare YONGFAN PSA fresh-air chemical filtration units (850–34,000 m³/h), PSA-PG high-airflow units (1,700–68,000 m³/h), DBS corridor positive-pressure/recirculation units, CA indoor recirculation units (850–6,800 m³/h with MediaPAK PK-12 modules), WGP industrial exhaust gas treatment (to 100,000+ m³/h), and OGP wastewater odor capture enclosures.

01 / Molecular Contaminant Analysis

Molecular Contaminants Require a Different Removal Strategy From Dust

A control room or wastewater facility can have low dust levels while H2S, SO2, chlorine, mercaptans, or VOCs attack electronics or cause severe environmental odor complaints.
Chemical filter media pellets, potassium permanganate impregnated alumina, and activated carbon beds
Targeted Chemisorption Media

KOH-Impregnated (PCB) · Permanganate (CPB) · High-CTC Carbon

PSA, PSA-PG, DBS, and CA protect indoor electronic spaces to ISA S71.04 Class G1; WGP treats contaminated industrial emissions before discharge.

HEPA Filter Gas Transparency

Assuming HEPA filters capture molecular gases; toxic H2S, SO2, and VOCs pass right through particle filters and corrode copper/silver circuit tracks.

Impact: Severe electronics corrosion & unmitigated gas emission

Intake vs Exhaust Equipment Confusion

Installing a protected-room fresh-air PSA unit on a heavy industrial exhaust stack, or using an open exhaust scrubber for pressurized room intake.

Impact: Rapid media destruction & failed environmental compliance

Generic Carbon Media Mismatch

Using standard virgin carbon for acid gases (NOx, SO2, chlorine) where specialized chemical chemisorption (permanganate CPB) is required.

Impact: Instant contaminant breakthrough & zero gas removal

Uncaptured Source Odor Bypass

Increasing exhaust treatment unit airflow on wastewater tanks without installing OGP source-capture covers allows odor to escape into atmosphere.

Impact: Wasted fan power & persistent community odor complaints

Industrial Gas-Phase Filtration FAQ

Direct engineering answers regarding HEPA limitations, PSA vs WGP, DBS vs CA, and media service life.

Can a HEPA filter remove H2S, SO2 or VOCs?

No. HEPA filters only remove suspended solid/liquid particles. Molecular gases require gas-phase chemical media tailored to the specific gas chemistry.

What is the main difference between PSA and WGP?

PSA treats incoming outdoor air to protect indoor electronics from corrosion. WGP treats contaminated outgoing process or wastewater exhaust before atmospheric discharge.

When should I choose PSA-PG instead of PSA?

Choose PSA-PG when fresh-air demand is very high (1,700–68,000 m³/h per unit). It consolidates airflow into fewer high-capacity units to simplify ductwork and maintenance.

What is the difference between DBS and CA?

DBS is designed for corridor/plant rooms and can provide positive-pressure fresh air or recirculation with loose media. CA is a dedicated quiet indoor recirculation purifier with slide-in MediaPAK modules.

Can CA replace the fresh-air system?

No. CA continuously cleans recirculated room air, but it does not supply the outdoor air required for room ventilation or positive pressurization.

What gases can WGP target?

WGP targets H2S (≥99%), SO2 (≥99%), TVOCs (≥95%), formaldehyde (≥96%), chlorine, ammonia, NOx, mercaptans, and mercury vapor.

How is WGP sized?

From exhaust airflow, gas species, and peak concentrations. The depth and stage count of the activated carbon and chemical chemisorption beds are customized for that load.

What is OGP used for?

OGP is an odor-source capping/enclosure system for wastewater tanks and channels. It captures fugitive emissions and routes them to WGP for treatment.

How often should chemical media be replaced?

There is no universal calendar date. Typical documented references are 1–2 years, but actual replacement depends on gas concentration, airflow, humidity, and operating hours.

Does one corrosion-control unit guarantee ISA G1 inside the room?

No. The unit delivers G1-grade air, but room environmental quality also depends on room leakage, positive pressurization, door opening frequency, and internal sources.

07 / Application Boundaries

Industrial Gas-Phase Engineering Boundaries

Key operational boundaries to respect when designing industrial gas-phase filtration systems.
Boundary 01 / Intake vs Exhaust

Do Not Merge PSA & WGP

Never use protected-room fresh-air units (PSA/PSA-PG) for outgoing process emissions, and do not use exhaust scrubbers for pressurized room intake.

Boundary 02 / Environmental G1

Room Envelope Dependent

ISA S71.04 Class G1 is a complete room target; one cabinet does not independently guarantee G1 without positive pressure and sealed penetrations.

Boundary 03 / Efficiency Conditions

99.5% Test Context

Supplier-published 99.5% gas removal values apply to documented test conditions and media configurations; verify against site gas concentrations.

Boundary 04 / Source Capture

OGP Is Not Removal

OGP is a mechanical enclosure for collecting odor; WGP performs the actual gas removal and emission treatment duty.
